Easiest Yes of All Time!
The Happiest of News!
Six weeks ago, on December 30th my best friend asked me to marry him, and I still cannot believe it!
I have been dreaming of this day since I was a little girl and I have been Pinterest-ing this season of life in eager anticipation for a good ten years.
I wanted to share our engagement story on my blog for quite a few reasons. One, so we can look back on it when we are old and wrinkly, two, I love to write and I never truly process things until I have written about them, three so our babies can read this one day and see what an amazing guy their dad is.
The fourth and last reason is probably the most important; when I first wanted to start a blog, I was in such a dark place, in a bad relationship, struggling my way through therapy trying to heal so I could one day be healthy enough for this exact moment. I always dreamed of sharing the hard process, but I never imagined how good it would feel to share some of the happy results.
Aidan’s proposal encapsulates who he is as a person- perfect, thoughtful, romantic, steady, and can always make the most out of any situation.
I’ll start the story there, making the most out of every situation. Aidan and I were supposed to be traveling in Italy with our best friends for the second half of my winter break. I had a strong inclination he may pop the question there, but all of that fell through when we tested positive for Covid the day before we were supposed to leave.
Disappointed is an understatement for how we were feeling, but we figured in the midst of a global pandemic, a loss of a trip was far from comparable to the grief many people have felt over the last couple years. So, we decided to make the most out of it!
The next day we (okay fine, Aidan) drove the fourteen hours to Virginia where we finished our quarantine and got to spend the second half of our trip on a beautiful vacation.
The day our quarantined ended Aidan made reservations at this amazing Italian restaurant (remember, we were meant to be in Italy) to celebrate being Covid free! I had absolutely zero idea that this was going to be the best dinner of my life.
We got to the restaurant and Aidan was sooo talkative to the server, in hindsight, how the heck did I not see this as nerves! Anyone who knows Aidan, knows chatting away to strangers is nothing new, but even for him this was a lot (I found out later the server knew he what this dinner was for, no wonder!)
Aidan and I ordered our favorite drinks, him, a Manhattan and me, a French 75 and we shared an appetizer. I just remember laughing with him thinking about what a great time we were having and it didn’t even matter that we weren’t in Europe, I was with my best friend, who I fully intending on marrying, if he’d just ask!
We ordered a bottle of wine with our dinner (because we were celebrating being Covid free of course, ha, yes, I believed that’s all this was.) Halfway through Aidan started talking about our life and our future and it hit me, this is it. Everything he was saying is such a blur now but knowing him it was super sweet. As soon as it him me, I grabbed his pocket (that had the ring in it) and said, “oh my god, are you proposing?”
I have zero chill.
He, as sweet as ever, smirked and said “well, I am trying to” he asked me if I would marry him and I had never felt so special and loved. Being loved by him is hands down the best thing that has ever happened to me. Aidan loves in a way I have never seen someone love, not just me but every person he cares about. His heart is truly the kindest I have ever met.
I of course said yes to him and we spent the rest of the night celebrating and calling family and friends to share the news. This night was a fairytale.
To make it even better, we still had five days in Virginia just the two of us. We got snowed in, played lots of cards, drank great wine, and created the most amazing memories together. Out engagement was nothing short of magical.
It’s been six weeks and that surreal feeling has yet to subside every time I look down at my left hand. I can’t believe I get to marry my favorite human and create a life together, and this is only the beginning!
